Flyers continue to search for building blocks; the latest on York

Share

Before having a highly unusual three days between games, the Flyers (20-18-6) wrap up a back-to-back set when they welcome the Islanders (27-13-4) on Sunday.

Let's get into the essentials for the game:

  • When: 6:30 p.m. ET
  • Where: Wells Fargo Center
  • Broadcast: NBC Sports Network (Brendan Burke and Pierre McGuire on the call)
  • Live stream: NBCSportsPhiladelphia.com and the NBC Sports MyTeams app

• The Flyers will continue to look for positives to potentially build off of for next season. With 12 games left, the Flyers entered Saturday eight points out of a playoff spot.

The more and more they can show signs of the 2019-20 club, the more confidence they'll have heading into the offseason.

Since the start of March, they've been a drastically different team. The Flyers have gone 9-14-3 with an NHL-high 4.04 goals allowed per game and a minus-40 goal differential.

• Cam York has been temporarily assigned to Flyers' taxi squad, according to a source. CapFriendly.com first reported the transaction.

The 2019 first-round pick signed his entry-level contract March 31. While there is a good chance York could get a taste of the NHL this season, the Flyers want the 20-year-old defenseman to have the proper amount of practice time and game action at AHL affiliate Lehigh Valley.

York has not played a game since March 15, which turned out to be his final hurrah at Michigan. The Phantoms are on hiatus because of COVID protocols. Lehigh Valley hasn't played since April 5 and its next scheduled game is Wednesday against Hershey. InsideAHLHockey.com's Tony Androckitis has more on the Phantoms' pause right here.

York will likely go back to Lehigh Valley as soon as the Phantoms are up and running, according to a source. York might be assigned back to Lehigh Valley as early as Monday.

Update: York was loaned back to the Phantoms on Monday.

• The Flyers are giving Wade Allison a good look and he has taken advantage through two games. With the Flyers missing two forwards Saturday, the 23-year-old winger played on the second line with Claude Giroux and Joel Farabee. On a power play opportunity, Allison scored his first career NHL goal in the third period of the team's 6-3 loss to the Capitals.

His audition for a roster spot next season will continue Sunday.

"You only get one shot at a first impression, so you’ve got to get out there, do your best, move your feet, bang some bodies and take care of the D-zone," Allison said postgame Saturday. "You’ve got to start strong because if you don’t have a good first impression, you put yourself behind the 8-ball."

• Head coach Alain Vigneault will hold his pregame media availability at 4 p.m. ET, so we'll know more then about the Flyers' lineup and injuries. Here was the latest Saturday afternoon on Carter Hart, Nolan Patrick and Tanner Laczynski.
