Giants send 13 players out with first round of spring cuts

Mesa, Ariz. — There were few surprises Monday when the Giants made their first round of spring cuts.

Eight players were optioned to minor league camp, including a couple of guys who have big league experience. The optioned players are: Tyler Herb, Pierce Johnson, Chase Johnson, Reyes Moronta, Steven Okert, D.J. Snelten, Aramis Garcia and Miguel Gomez.

Gomez, an infielder, impressed the staff with his approach from both sides of the plate, and he could be an option later this year as a bench bat. Okert allowed just one run in five appearances but the Giants have Tony Watson set as their top left-hander and Josh Osich is throwing as well as anyone in camp. Garcia saw plenty of time with Buster Posey and Hector Sanchez nursing injuries; he likely will begin his season in Double-A.

The Giants also reassigned five players to minor league camp: Tyler Cyr, Jose Flores, Dereck Rodriguez, Madison Younginer and Alen Hanson. A utility player, Hanson showed off his speed at times, but Chase d’Arnaud and Josh Rutledge appear to be the two infielders most likely to push Kelby Tomlinson.

With the cuts, the Giants are down to 47 players in camp.
