
Jason Tarver is leaving his post as 49ers senior defensive assistant to return to the college ranks.
Tarver, who served two stints as a 49ers assistant coach between duties as defensive coordinator at Stanford and with the Oakland Raiders, was named Thursday as the defensive coordinator at Vanderbilt.
Vanderbilt head coach Derek Mason served as a Stanford assistant from 2010 to 2013. Tarver was Stanford’s defensive coordinator in 2011 before serving as Raiders defensive coordinator from 2012 to ’14.

Tarver returned to the 49ers in 2015, working with outside linebackers under Jim Tomsula, Chip Kelly and last season under Kyle Shanahan.
Tarver previously worked for the 49ers from 2001 to 2010 under coaches Steve Mariucci, Dennis Erickson, Mike Nolan and Mike Singletary.
